Okay, let’s relive the 80’s with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City!
Ahh, GTA Vice City. This game has really liven up my childhood. I used to play for hours on end just playing this game. Back them I didn’t care about the story, I just wanted to drive around a city, running over pedestrians, shooting stuff and whatnot (I’m not messed up, I swear!)
I recently played it again, and let me tell you, the same feeling I had when playing this as a kid is still there. But I’ve grown to like the story, the characters, the music, everything else I’ve overlooked as a kid.
Let me tell you why…
Greetings from Vice City!
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is an action-adventure game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. It was released for the PS2 in October 27, 2002, May 12, 2003 for the PC, and October 31, 2003 for the Xbox.
Set in 1986 within the fictional Vice City, based on Miami, the game follows mobster Tommy Vercetti following his release from prison. After he is caught up in an ambushed drug deal, he seeks out those responsible while building a criminal empire and seizing power from other criminal organisations in the city.
This game was a huge success, in fact, it quickly became the best-selling game IN HISTORY at the time, despite the loads of controversies it has accrued. Rockstar really loves their fair share of controversy.
Despite that, it has been critically praised for its gameplay, characters, diversity, and story. That’s how good this game is.
Feel like a gangster boss!
Gameplay, like most GTA titles, is from a third-person perspective with open world elements. As the player, you can pretty much do anything. Some of the things you can do:
- Drive around the city
- Fight with police
- Fight with pedestrians
- Run over pedestrians
- Drive vehicles ranging from cars, bikes, helicopters, and a TANK
- Buy property around the city
- Cause mayhem
..and the list goes on!
Who is the guy?
So you’ll be playing as Tommy Vercetti (the guy pictured above).
After serving 15 years in jail, you are sent to Vice City to establish a base of operations there for a mafia family (GTA Lore is so expansive. I recommend reading on it). However, after meeting up with the drug sellers, things go awry as the deal is ambushed by gunmen, and you have no choice but to escape, leaving the drugs and money behind.
This is where the story starts. You have to work your way up Vice City’s criminal underworld to hopefully find out who setup the ambush and “talk to them” about it.
You will do all sorts of missions, from assassination missions, to delivery missions, there’s a LOT.
You will even get to partake in gang wars!
You’ll be encountering all sorts of characters along your journey, who will either help you, or fight you.
Tommy’s end game is ultimately becoming the new criminal boss of Vice City. It’s kinda like owning, the city, in a way. The story is really good.
Miami Vice City!
As a kid, I was astounded at how big Vice City is. I was ecstatic about all the things I can do, and the places I can go to. Now, I don’t feel that way anymore. :p
Don’t get me wrong, the place still feels like a real city. Adulthood really changes you, huh.
There’s still lots of things to do in Vice City, causing chaos is one of them!
Some of the buildings even have interiors! Imagine how stoked I was as a child when I discovered that you can enter most buildings!
If you live in Miami, Florida, you might become accustomed with the city, as it is based on Miami. If you’ve experienced the 1980s, then you will love this game even more!
The radio in this game, it’s something else. As a fan of the “oldies” music, meaning music from the 1970s until the early 2000s, I really, really, REALLY enjoyed listening to the radio. Music you will all be familiar with, you can’t help but jive to the music.
Besides the music, the radio feels like a fully fledged, well, radio! Rockstar really put in effort with this, as you can listen to talk shows, interviews, commercials, all created by Rockstar! It features characters, brands, and shows that are created exclusively for the Grand Theft Auto universe!
Like I said, this universe is very large, there’s a lot to take in. But it is a fun read.
This game, quite frankly for me, was way ahead of its time. It was released 2002, but the sheer scope of it at the time was mind boggling. It already felt like you’re in a full fledged city! Well, maybe it’s the 12 year old me talking like this.
That’s how much I love this game. There’s a reason why this game became a hit, and why so many love this game to this day.
On top of that, this game has aged quite well. I’ve played it recently, finishing the whole game again (I played it for the 10th time at this point), and yeah, the game has aged well. It didn’t feel like I was playing an outdated game. I still enjoyed it, got hooked with the story, Tommy Vercetti is just a charming guy, and all in all, it still feels like I was playing it again for the first time.
Wanna play this!
I know you do! You can get it on G2A! They are legit, trust me on this one!

I really, really, really, REALLY recommend this game, even though it is 17 years old. It’s a really good game, albeit a little controversial. (“a little” maybe an understatement :p )
