Enthralling Far Cry 5 Review!

Far Cry 5 Review

Hello dear readers! Today I’ll be writing a Far Cry 5 review. Will you join the cult?

Okay, that started weird. Before anything else, I just want to say, that this post contains a little bit of gore (in-game gore, of course).

With that out of the way, let us get started with this awesome game!

Let’s start this Far Cry 5 Review with…

Far Cry 5 Review

Looking… (Ubisoft)

Far Cry 5 is a 2018 first-person shooter game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Toronto and published by Ubisoft.  It was released for the PC, Xbox One, and the PS4 on March 27, 2018. It is the fifth main installment in the Far Cry series.

The game takes place in Hope County, a fictional region of Montana (which is not fictitious), United States. The plot revolves around the Project at Eden’s Gate, a religious doomsday cult that has taken over Hope County at the order of its charismatic (quite frankly, hot) and powerful leader, Joseph Seed.

As the player, you will be in control of an unnamed junior deputy sheriff who becomes trapped in the County. You must work alongside The Resistance, a group of fighters that, you know, resist the cult, to liberate the county from the despotic rule of the Seeds and Eden’s Gate.

This game was heavily inspired by several socio-political events in modern history, such as the Cold War and the September 11 attacks. The game drew controversy for this after being announced at the height of several political conflicts. Regardless, the game was critically praised for its design, visuals, gameplay, and soundtrack.

Gameplay?

Far Cry 5 Review

Looking cool. (Ubisoft)

Gameplay is from a first person shooter perspective. The game has you focus on combat and exploration; players battle enemy soldiers and dangerous Montana wildlife using a wide array of weapons. The game features many elements found in role-playing games, such as an arching storyline and several side quests. The game also has a co-op multiplayer, competitive multiplayer and a map editor.

You can pretty much do anything in this game. You can fly a plane, glide in a wingsuit, parachute, climb mountains, slide down mountains, hunt animals, fish, talk to people, ride a car, explore, endless!

Oh, you can also hire allies to help you take down the cult. They are a great help, and they each have their own abilities. You can even have a bear and a cougar as allies!

Will you join? (Ubisoft)

As mentioned earlier, you will be playing an unnamed junior deputy trapped in the county after the arrest of Joseph Seed (we’ll talk all about the Seed family after this) has gone wrong. This allowed Joseph to rally the whole cult and start preparing for the Collapse, a doomsday event predicted by him. Basically he was told by the Lord’s voice that the world will end, so he ordered his cult to start forcibly capturing townsfolk, raiding farms, and killing anyone who resists them. This was being done so they would be “saved”. Very vague, I know.

You, as the player, are then tasked to liberate the whole county from The Project at Eden’s Gate and the rest of the Seed family. In order for you to successfully liberate the county, you have to seek help from The Resistance, the faction that is fighting for Hope County’s freedom.

The Resistance are split in groups of three across the three regions of the county, with each group having their own leader. Your task, as the player, is to do whatever it takes to earn the trust and inspire the local Resistance forces in that region. Free prisoners, save hostages, liberate outposts, do missions for Resistance leaders and the locals, and they will gladly help to fight and free the county.

Beautiful Montana

Far Cry 5 Review

Look at how pretty this is. (Ubisoft)

Before we get to the Seed family, can we just quickly talk about how beautiful they created Hope County? I’ve never been to Montana, but I’m positive that it more or less looks like this. Can any Montanians(sorry I must’ve butchered that) confirm? I mean look how beautiful it is.

The county is split into three regions: Holland Valley, Henbane River, and Whitetail Mountains.

Holland Valley is mostly flat, with large farmland and orchards dotted around the region.

Henbane River is a mixture of flatlands and mountains, with the Henbane River spanning around the region. Great place for fishing!

Whitetail Mountains is, well, mountains. Most, if not all of the land around this region is mountainous, save for the main road that circles the entire county.

The wildlife is also vast, from bears, to cougars, to moose, to caribou, there’s a lot of animals for you to see. And they interact with each other, just like a real ecosystem that functions.

I would love to visit Montana someday and just hike, fish, and camp out (avoiding the wildlife, of course) especially if it looks like the pictures above. Beautiful Montana!

What is with these cults?

Far Cry 5 Review

Sacrifice the weak.. (Ubisoft)

Okay, BEFORE we talk about the Seeds, let’s touch up on their cult, The Project At Eden’s Gate. Basically they’re a doomsday cult led by Joseph Seed. They believed in Joseph’s prediction about the world ending someday, and the reason they believe it is because Joseph promised them salvation and prosperity after the Collapse, and will live in a new world with Joseph.

Weak. (Ubisoft)

As explained earlier, Joseph ordered the cult to start ransacking the whole county of food, supplies, and people, in the hopes that “they will see the light and be set free from their sins to be able to enter Eden’s Gate” (Joseph’s words, not mine).

The cult itself might be preparing for something, but the way they do it is just so wrong. If you want to see why it’s wrong, play the game and you’ll see. You already see what they are capable of via the picture above. Still, no spoilers. 😉

Why’d they name them “Seed” though?

Far Cry 5 Review

The Seeds, well mostly Joseph. (Ubisoft)

Good question, but that’s not why we’re here. Let us all welcome the Seed family, starting from John Seed, Faith Seed, Jacob Seed, and Joseph Seed. Joseph is their leader, and he calls his three siblings his “Heralds”.

Let’s quickly describe them, shall we?

John Seed

Far Cry 5 Review

John is the youngest of the Seed family, and probably the most sadistic (as told by the locals in the region he controls). He is the Herald of the Holland Valley region. He is in charge of getting the supplies for the cult, and “recruiting” other townsfolk to join the cult. His methods of recruiting include forcibly getting them from their homes, “baptizing” them, and “forgiving” them of their sins. Trust me, you have to see it to know what I mean. This is a review, after all. :p

Jacob Seed

Far Cry 5 Review

Jacob is the oldest of the Seed family, and is the Herald of the Whitetail Mountains. He is in charge of training the cult’s militia, molding them into killing machines, basically. He is an army veteran who has seen some shit in the war, and this led to his mentality of “Sacrifice the weak. Cull the herd.” Basically he kills people who he deems weak and unable to fight for the cult. Really stand up guy. He is also known for creating Judges. Which I will let you find out what are they as well 😉

Faith Seed

Far Cry 5 Review

It is unknown how Faith got into the cult, as she is not a Seed by blood, but Joseph considers her a sibling, so here she is. Faith is the Herald of the Henbane River region, and is tasked with the distribution of the powerful drug known as the “Bliss”. Basically the Bliss is a drug that induces vivid hallucinations of a blissful paradise, where everything is safe and fluffy and comfortable.

What you see during the Bliss hallucinations. (Ubisoft)

Faith herself is a dangerous individual, due to her innocent and pure appearance concealing her manipulative and heartless demeanor.

Joseph Seed

Far Cry 5 Review

Ahh yes, Joseph Seed. He is the leader of the Seed family, and the leader of the Project at Eden’s Gate. He is endearingly called “The Father”, as the cult believes that God himself has spoken to Joseph about the Collapse. The cult follows him without question, and they believe every word he says. He looks like your everyday hipster, but he is a charismatic and enigmatic individual, which, for me, are the most dangerous traits of all.

Final thoughts, Deputy?

Far Cry 5 Review

Final thoughts? Hit ’em with a shovel. (Ubisoft)

This game is a great game. From the design elements, to the rendering of Hope County, it’s absolutely stunning. The vast wilderness you can explore, the small towns and homes with people either living in fear of the cult, or simply do not care at all, you can see them all in this one small county of Montana.

The only flaw I would say is the story. The characters (well some of them), aren’t fully fleshed out, the story is not really that engaging, but it is a good story, nonetheless.

The option for a customizable protagonist was also great. You can play as a male or female, which is always nice. And the wide array of fashionable clothes to wear while wielding also a vast array of weapons is a nice touch.

Gameplay itself was pretty fun, as I always love me a good first person shooter game. The RPG elements added to it was also a nice touch, and you can play however you like, be it a stealthy shoot-from-afar type to a rampaging, gun-toting, Rambo-esque player, the possibilities are endless.

All in all I highly recommend this game, especially if you’re into stopping murderous doomsday cults led by a hipster. :p

Thank you for your comprehensive review which clearly shows that you have enjoyed the game. The fun of games like these is the renewing elements that they have. Is this game easy to complete in all its levels, or does it demand a high level of competence and hundreds of replays?

    • Thank you!

It is overwhelming at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s easy. It still requires a degree of strategizing and reflexes though.

  2. Wow this game has incredible graphics and I can see why Far Cry has been praised for its graphics and visualizations. I was expecting a little more gore than you’ve described but I was pleasantly surprised that it definitely isn’t anything like the walking dead.

You mentioned the concept of hiring allies in the game. How is that done? Do you have to use your own real money or is the game using a system of credit or exchanging your experience level for your purchasing needs?

    • Yeah, I kinda missed it with the gore. Probably gonna add more pictures later. :p

Some allies, you can pick right off the road. You can hire them free of charge. There are special allies that you can get that are far better than the ones you can randomly encounter. In order to unlock them you need to do their quest. Once you do that, they are available!
