Want to experience a dinosaur park simulator? Well I do, and we have it, with Jurassic World Evolution!
Dinosaurs. Such magnificent creatures. And we haven’t really touched the surface as to how really they existed. I’ve been in love with dinosaurs ever since I was a kid, and now I will tell you why I fell in love with Jurassic World Evolution!
I’ve only had this game for like 3 months and already I am in awe about how good this game is. Plus the fact that I am a huge dinosaur fan, this was my game to play.
This game is so Juras-sick!
The game was released on 12 June 2018, for the PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Gameplay revolves around players constructing a dinosaur theme park on the fictional Las Cinco Muertes Archipelago, a group of five islands also known as the “Five Deaths”. The game features more than 40 types of dinosaurs(not a lot, but still great!). Their genes can be modified to introduce new features. Players are given contracts to fulfill by three divisions, Science, Security, and Entertainment. They give out cash rewards and unlock certain features, buildings or dinosaurs whenever you complete a certain amount of contracts for them.
There’s also a sandbox mode that is open to all islands, provided you unlock them via the campaign missions.
Okay, let’s get to the real selling point of this game: the dinosaurs. Like I’ve said, I’ve been a huge dinosaur geek since I was young. This all started when I watched the first Jurassic Park film.
Ever since then, I’ve been hooked and fascinated by these creatures; how they lived, how they ate, how they behaved, and how they evolved from hulking beasts of terror and awe, to small ,feathery creatures (yes birds are descendants of dinosaurs, not reptiles as first thought).
Seeing them in this game, with you bringing them to life and caring for them, brought out my inner 10 year old (I actually screamed when I first released my very first Tyrannosaurus Rex). The way they captured everything, down to what they look, how they ate, and even how they socialized(even though there’s still research on going regarding dinosaurs’ behavior as a whole).
Dinosaurs in this game range from the known ones like Triceratops, the Tyrannosaurus Rex, Diplodocus, to the obscure ones such as Nodosaurus, Deinonychus, Baronynx, etc. Being a dino nerd really helps, as you will easily recognize the dinosaurs and will have an idea regarding their needs.
“A boiling kettle of entertainment, waiting to explode from the pressure…”
As mentioned earlier, gameplay is a business management simulator. Personally I thought of the game as like The Sims 4, but with dinosaurs. They can either make your virtual park the best virtual park ever, or make it the worst vacation ever for your human guests.
There are 3 gameplay modes.
The first one is the Campaign mode. The campaign itself is pretty short. For each island, you have 3 missions from each division. You have to do said missions in order to get money, unlock certain upgrades or genes. You have to unlock missions by performing “contracts” for each division as well. Some contracts make sense, others….do not.
Second one is the Challenge mode. These are basically different scenarios that you need to complete in order to complete a challenge. Completing a challenge unlocks more dinosaurs and dinosaur skins. If you want to spice up your park building experience, this is a very good way to do it.
The third one, arguably the most fun mode, is the Sandbox mode. You basically become the ultimate park building and management god. You can have unlimited money, control the weather, control the dinosaurs’ behavior, control power distribution, and many more.
There’s no contracts to be given out, no penalties, no restrictions. Everything you have unlocked via the Campaign and Challenge modes will carry over to your Sandbox game. You can still build the ultimate dinosaur theme park with the best dinosaurs you can breed. Or you can be a devil and turn this dinosaur park management simulator to a dinosaur park disaster simulator.
I’m guessing you know what I mean by that. All I’m saying is, your park is the perfect feeding grounds for your carnivores. *wink wink*
Really fun stuff.
“We must go faster.” – Dr. Ian Malcolm
The characters from all the movies make a return in this game. If you’ve watched the movies, you will know who they are, so I won’t spoil them. The actors lent their voice for their characters in the game. Suffice to say, building a dinosaur park is made better thanks to the soothing voice of Jeff Goldblum. God I love that man.
As you can probably tell, I am a huge dinosaur fan.
As for the game, you can breed these dinosaurs with features to your liking, such as giving them different skin patterns and colors, increase their attack, defense, and lifespan traits, etc. Applying these also increases the dinosaur’s rating, which in turn increases visitors, in turn giving more profit to you, at the cost of increasing difficulty to breed these dinosaurs, and more chaotic dinosaurs, to say the least.
You can even allow your dinosaurs to hunt other dinosaurs, or have them fight one another in a pit of death-esque thing, hence why there’s a stat for attack and defense.
You also have to take care of your dinosaurs by having sufficient food for them via feeders that timely deposits food for them. As for water, you can just create a water source near them and they’ll drink when they need to.
There are more needs that you need to learn to balance in order for your dinosaurs to stay comfortable. Once they lose comfort, they’ll start escaping. And an escaped dinosaur is a bad thing, well, unless you purposely wanted them to escape. 😉
Will you be a responsible park manager, or a devilish one?
This game is fantastic. The game itself looks overwhelming at first, but they guide you just enough, and allow you to still be creative with your park. When you get the hang of it, it becomes easy as pie.
Only takeaway I can say is the story is a tad bit shallow, but I just view the whole campaign as something I need to do to unlock more dinosaurs, you never can’t have too much dinosaurs, am I right?
Also, the contracts, like I’ve mentioned, some of them doesn’t make sense. I mean, there’s one contract that they give you that WANTS you to release a dinosaur in your park. Like, what?
All in all, the game is a fun, relaxing way to spend your gaming sessions. You can just watch your dinosaurs roam contently in their pens, or watch them slaughter and destroy your park.
Just like the heading says, will you?
